Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs)

Register of Exercise Professionals (REPS) is a UK-based scheme for fitness instructors and personal trainers. It recognizes industry-specific certifications and provides public liability coverage, and requires that members adhere to an industry-specific code of conduct.

In 2020, the organization was disbanded and its members migrated over to CIMSPA. What does this mean for fitness professionals?

How do I become an REP?

What is CIMSPA

It is also responsible for maintaining and developing professional standards for the fitness industry.

This is accomplished by working in collaboration with the sector to understand and identify the requirements of the profession as well as the obstacles that hinder the ability of the profession to provide.

CIMSPA as part of its mission offers a framework for a quality-assurance system for the fitness sector in the form an endorsement process. Are REPs qualifications recognized internationally?

The Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) was a public, independent register that operated through a membership scheme. It was created to protect the public and give fitness professionals and employers the confidence they wanted to know that a person was a professional with qualifications that were recognized as valid and approved, and that were that were in line with National Occupational Standards.

REPs is a UK-based register, and as such only covers the UK fitness sector. Having REPs was not a legal requirement however it gave clients confidence that the fitness professional they were working with was fully qualified and operating within the highest standards of professionalism.

In 2020, REPs was sold to UK Coaching and an agreement was reached with CIMSPA which combined the REPs directory with the CIMSPA Directory. Fitness professionals can continue to be a member of both REPs and CIMSPA. However, renewing REPs membership will not be available anymore.

ICREPs, which connects fitness professionals from all over the world with international registers, has a global presence. This means that if you're REPs-certified in the UK you can transfer to avon become a rep personal trainers in other ICREPs countries, such as Australia, Ireland, Poland, South Africa and UAE.

However it is vital to keep in mind that REPs isn't an assurance of employment or insurance cover for fitness professionals. REPs is an association for industry and not a governing authority is a voluntary organization. REPs will not provide insurance or employment for their fitness professionals.
