When ANC is on, the Q30's 40mm drivers effectively block out most of the ambient noise, and provide very pleasant listening. The Q30's sound quality is natural, however it lags it is a bit treble. Some might not be a fan of the bass response (we got better results using the Bass Booster EQ). However, you can solve this issue by using the Soundcore application, as there is an 8-band equalizer to allow you to tweak.

The headphones feature a power button and pairing button on the left earcup as well as an USB-C port to charge. The right earcup has buttons for play/pause, volume control and volume up/down. Focal's Bathys Wireless is a pair of powerful over-ear Bluetooth headphones that offer active noise cancellation and Bluetooth playback. They're made to be a pair of premium high-end headphones that are great for listening to podcasts and music on the go but also are a great choice for home use by audiophiles too. They're slightly more expensive than other similar headphones but their superior sound quality is their main selling point.

The Focal Bathys are packaged in a compact attractive white box with a fabric finish. It includes all the accessories you'll need. The headphone carry case folds flat, and comes with a case, USB-C-to-USB-C cable, 1.2mm SE cable and an audio adapter.

They're powered by a respectable 600mAh battery that can get you through a whole day of listening, and have an audio input for wired use. When they're wirelessly connected, they're connected via Bluetooth and you'll be able to control their functions using an app (now called Focal and Naim which is probably in line with their English sister brand Naim's network-aware audio products) or by pressing the button on the left earcup that scrolls between ANC profiles like'silent','soft' 'transparent' and 'full'.

The app allows you to adjust various settings, including the brightness of the LEDs and the EQ presets (including the music profile, which sounds brighter and neutraler than the other profiles) and the battery life. It also lets you to select the ANC mode and its level as well as setting an 'acoustic' setting that will adjust the sensitivity of your audio to simulate what it would sound like if it were placed in a room with different audio acoustics.

The Focal Bathys come with a bass-rich sound profile that adds more energy, impact and warmth to your favourite tracks. The result is that instruments and vocals can be muted, and details like cymbals might be less prominent than on other headphones. The headphones are also less effective at active noise cancellation compared to other over-ears that have higher-end technology, like the Sony WH1000XM5 or Apple AirPods Max.

Sony WH-1000XM5

Sony has a stellar reputation for its headphones, and the WH-1000XM5 headphones are no exception. It is a top pick in the over-ear headphone market, which is a mainstream market and borders the 'luxury' lifestyle market in which brands like Apple, Montblanc, Bang & Olufsen and Montblanc are situated. The XM5s have a premium price tag, but when you can afford it, there are few more superior beats wireless noise cancelling headphones over-ear headphones on the market.

The XM5s are loaded with a number of features that simplify the lives of the listener, and also automate tasks that they'd otherwise be required to do manually. Sony's DSEE Extreme Engine (which upscales music that has been compressed to near high-res), as well as Bluetooth's LDAC Technology, are included. That allows for streaming of high-quality audio at bitrates that are higher than standard Bluetooth. It also has a built-in microphone for making hands-free phone calls.

The XM5 headphones aren't different than the previous generation headphones from WH in terms of noise cancellation. They are among the best at reducing the constant drones that can be heard in underground and train carriages. The XM5s are also excellent at isolating the listener from the hum of busy airports and streets.

Sound quality is also excellent. The XM5s may not be as detailed in the low frequencies as the XM4, but they have a higher level of clarity and transparency as well. For example, the bass work on Rage Against The Machine's Bullet in the Head flexes the Sonys muscles with real force and definition, while not sagging everything else. Similarly, Massive Attack's brooding Angel shows off the XM5s ability to produce accurate and precise bass notes.

Battery life is excellent, with up to 30 hours of listening time when ANC is active and up to 40 hours when it's off. That's more than enough to last for a weekend getaway or a few days of heavy use.

The only drawback is that the XM5s do not have any dust or water resistance protection. In fact, Sony recommends that you avoid sweating on them or wear them in the rain. This might not be a problem for many people, but it could prove a stumbling block for anyone considering the XM5s who spend a lot of their time at the gym or lives in a rainy city.

Apple AirPods Max

The Apple AirPods Max are a pair of wireless headphones that fit over the ear equipped with Bluetooth technology and noise cancelling. They feature 40mm Apple-designed dynamic drivers with an audio profile that is neutral and concentrates on the highs and mids while not going too loud on either end of the spectrum. They are perfect for music and movies. They also have better sound quality than many competing pairs of headphones.

The headphones are lightweight and comfortable on the head. The earcups, which are made of memory foam covered with woven fabric and sit comfortably over the ears and do not place pressure on the sides or the forehead. The ear cups also tilt and rotate to accommodate various head shapes. The hinges that are spring loaded have a firm but not overly powerful clamping force, which makes sure that the ear cups remain in place during listening sessions.

A small button on the top of the right ear cup allows you to switch between noise cancelling modes. There's also a pushable, like a jog-dial, similar to the digital crown on the Apple Watch, that you can turn to control volume and press the button once twice or three times to control playback. Pressing and holding the button invokes Siri. The buttons are easy to use and are well-placed, however I would have liked to see an option to power off or switch off the headphones when in use. The headphones automatically go into standby mode when removed from your ear or placed in their case, and they only come back on ear wireless headphones when you place them on your head once more.

Another feature that is quite cool is spatial audio, which makes use of the accelerometers and gyroscopes of the AirPods Max and your iPhone or iPad to figure out where you're moving, then repositions sound to create the illusion that they're coming from those places. This creates an immersive theater experience for movies and videos recorded in 5.1, 7.1 or Dolby Atmos. The only drawback is that spatial audio requires an iOS device for use, and it won't allow you to enjoy it with other devices.

The AirPods Max are a decent pair of headphones, but I'd feel somewhat smug walking into an Apple Store and spending $549 on the headphones if I knew they'd be beaten in a year by the new model. AirPods Pro are more expensive however they offer more battery life and are equipped with the latest features.
