The Soundcore app has a huge variety of EQ presets, which can be customized and saved to allow you to listen to music and podcasts in the way you prefer. This is the thing that sets these headphones apart from other ANC headphones, and the Soundcore app is extremely simple to use.

The Q30's 40mm speaker effectively block nearly all ambient noise when ANC is turned on. This makes for a very pleasant listening experience. The Q30's sound quality is natural, but it's a bit harsh on the treble. Some might be disappointed by the bass response (we got better results with the Bass Booster equalizer). However, you can fix this with the Soundcore app, as there is an 8-band equalizer to allow you to tweak.

The headphones feature the power button and a pairing button on the left ear cup and an USB-C port to charge. The right earcup has play/pause, the volume up and down buttons. By double-clicking these controls, you can skip tracks or repeat the previous one. You can also use voice commands to ask for a change in mode or set alarms. You can also cover the right earcup with your fingers to activate ambient modes so that you can hear everything around you without taking off the headphones.

These headphones have a great battery life. In our tests with ANC turned on, the Q30 lasted nearly an hour longer than its competitors. This leaves plenty of time for an extended flight or working for a long time. The included USB-C cord allows you to quickly recharge them. You'll also get an alert when the battery is getting close to empty.

Focal Bathys Wireless

Focal's Bathys Wireless is a pair of powerful over-ear Bluetooth headphones that offer active noise cancellation as well as Bluetooth playback. They are designed to be premium, high-end headphones that can be used at home or while on the move. They're a little more expensive than other similar headphones, but their exceptional sound quality is their main selling factor.

Utilizing the app, you are able to alter different settings like the brightness of the LED as well as EQ presets that include a "music' profile that sounds brighter and more neutral than the others and their battery duration. It also allows you to choose the ANC mode and the level as well as setting an 'acoustic' setting which adjusts the sensitivity of your audio to simulate what it would sound like if it were placed in a space with different soundproofing.

The Focal Bathys feature a bass-rich sound profile that delivers extra energy and warmth to your favourite tracks. The XM5s are costly however, if you can afford it get them, you won't find a better wireless over-ear headphones.

The XM5s have features that simplify the lives of listeners and, in some instances, automate tasks that they'd otherwise have to do manually. Sony's DSEE Extreme Engine (which upscales music to near-high-resolution), as well as Bluetooth's LDAC Technology are all included. This allows for streaming of high-quality audio with rates that are higher than traditional Bluetooth. There's even a built-in microphone to allow making hands-free calls.

As with the previous generation of WH headphones, the XM5s excel at noise cancellation. They're among the top-performing headphones for removing the constant drones heard in underground and train carriages. The XM5s are also excellent at isolating the listener from the noises of busy airports and streets.

The sound quality is also great. The XM5s do not have as much detail in the low-frequency range like the XM4, however they do possess more clarity and a greater sense of openness. The bass in Rage Against the Machine’s Bullet in the Head shows off the Sonys' power and definition without affecting the music. Similarly, Massive Attack's brooding Angel shows off the XM5s' ability to deliver accurate and precise bass notes.

The battery life is fantastic and can last up to 30 hours of listening time when ANC is active and up to 40 hours when it's off. This is enough to cover a weekend getaway or several days of heavy use.

The only drawback is that the XM5s do not have any dust or water resistance protection. In fact, Sony recommends that you not sweat on them or wear them out in the rain. This may not be a big deal for the majority of people however for those who spend a lot of time in the gym or live in a rainy location it could be a big issue.

Apple AirPods Max

The Apple AirPods Max are a pair of Bt Wireless Headphones headphones that fit over the ear that come with Bluetooth technology and noise cancelling. They feature 40mm Apple-designed dynamic drivers with an audio profile that is neutral and is focused on the mids and highs while not going overboard at either end of the spectrum. They are perfect for music and movies. They also have higher fidelity compared to other headphones.

The headphones are lightweight and comfortable on the head. The earcups, which are made of memory foam, are covered with woven fabric and sit comfortably over the ears, do not put pressure on the sides or forehead. The ear cups also tilt and rotate to accommodate various head shapes. The spring-loaded hinges have a firm but not overly robust clamping force that makes sure that the ear cups remain in place throughout listening sessions.

Switch on noise cancellation by pressing a small button located at the top of the right earcup. It also has a pushable jog dial-like button similar to the digital Crown on the Apple Watch. You can twist it for volume control, and press it once three, twice, or even three times for playback controls. Siri is invoked by pressing and holding the button. The buttons are easy to use and well-placed, however I would have liked to see the power button that could turn off the headphones when in use. The headphones automatically switch to standby mode after being removed from your ear or placed in their case. They only wake up when you slide them over your head again.

Spatial audio is a cool feature. It uses the accelerometers, gyroscopes and iPhones or iPads to determine where you're moving. Then, it alters the position of the sound so that they seem to be coming from the location you are in. This creates an immersive theater experience for films and videos that were recorded in 5.1, 7.1 or Dolby Atmos. The only catch is that spatial audio requires an iOS device to be used, and you won't be able to experience it on other devices.

The AirPods Max is a decent pair, but I'd feel a bit ripped off when I spend $549 at an Apple Store knowing that the next-generation model will be better within a year. AirPods Pro are more expensive and have superior battery life and more advanced features.
